While visiting the magazine’s office one day, Barsotti learned that the head of the Newsday syndicate had been fired. “It was close to the holidays, and Geraghty, in his mystical Irish way, said something like ‘By the way, we would like to have legal recognition’—some phrase like that—‘between the two of us. You might take this to your lawyer, look at it, see what you think.’ I went to lunch with a Newsweek writer and said, ‘I don’t know for sure, but I think I might have just been offered a New Yorker contract.’ And that’s what it was. But there was no hint of it ahead of time. If there had been, I would never have gone down the painful path of the comic strip.” With contract in hand, Barsotti moved his family back to Kansas City.
